Real Madrid shows its rearmament to Europe

Real Madrid was launched to mark territory voraciously from day one. To show muscle in Europe against the champion Efes, with William-Goss, Hanga, Yabusele and Tavares gathered in a powerful quintet, along with Causeur, accredited ambassador of the French delegation. They wanted to show off the targets of ambition and rearmament after the agonizing playoff no award from last season. And the duel lasted a sigh. Laso’s men demarcated and came sprinting to the goal, solid and fast-paced. First, with defensive intensity and without fouls; later, running out in the open and driven by Heurtel’s tuning (15 points). Some quick turns of the screw with which the locals overwhelmed a hypotensive Efes who found no answer or remedy. From 12-0 at three minutes to 32-15 with which the first quarter closed. With some remarkable shooting percentages for the madridistas and Micic totally annulled by the rival shackles. Immediately afterwards, a burst of three consecutive triples, by Llull, William-Goss and Abalde, definitively unraveled the score (41-20, m. 13). The locals did not relax, that with Yabusele (15 points and energy strokes) and Tavares (13 points and 12 rebounds) on percussion they played looking at the past, present and future of the competition against one of their intimate enemies in recent times in the Euroleague.

It was Larkin who tried to reduce water in the midst of Madrid’s downpour, but his points quartermaster could barely cut the distance. The European champion did not appear in the WiZink, but a sounded team, without the sharp competitive fang yet. Laso’s team reached the break dominating the rebound (19-8 in the intermission; 42-18 at the end), the hunger statistic. And, although his attack was flattened almost in the middle (from 32 points in the first quarter to 18 in the second), the defensive concentration remained intact until the end. Like the difference in the score, which portrayed the contrast with respect to the panorama experienced by the two teams five months ago. This time, Laso’s team had time to enjoy and adjust the jersey for the promising photo with which the Tourmalet of the Euroleague begins.

In May, Madrid fell on their feet in Istanbul in the playoff of quarters against Efes, after Laso squeezed resources and the slate like never before. With Alocén, Carroll, Abalde, Garuba and Tyus in the starting five that day. With Garuba leading a proud subversion through a mutant 1-2-2 zone that at times short-circuited an Efes that seemed unapproachable. It was not enough to escape the effects of a decapitalization that only came to an end in the summer transfer market. “We come from two difficult years due to the departure of very important players [Doncic, Campazzo, Deck] and for long-term injuries to key parts [Randolph]. It was mandatory that we rearm the squad ”, Laso developed before starting his eleventh year at the head of the team. In six of the nine previous editions of the Euroleague (the one in 2020 was canceled due to the pandemic), Madrid reached the Final Four, in four it competed until the final, and in two it raised the champion trophy (2015 and 2018).

And no one like Guerschon Yabusele, with his powerful displacement of 2.04m and 125 kilos, to represent the renewed physical vigor of the whites after their rebuilding. A broad repertoire that Thompkins and Randolph will join next month to compete to return to the Final Four. On the opening day, it was enough with the onslaught of Yabusele (long applauded by the parish of the Palace), the tact of Heurtel and the reliability of Tavares for Madrid to air the champion. Only the final makeup of the Turkish team converted the 77-56 of minute 36 into the final 82-69.
