2-0: Sevilla win again and put pressure on Real Madrid

Sevilla, in Martial’s debut at the Sánchez Pizjuán, closed their run of three draws and returned to winning ways to put pressure on Real Madrid at the top of the table. Lopetegui’s men, who had generated doubts in their fans, defeated a rival that had not lost in 2022 and strengthen their position in second place in the League, with quite a few points ahead of their pursuers. The goals from Papu Gómez and Rafa Mir, both beautifully made, put the Andalusians back in orbit.

The team from Seville, with losses still in the eleven (especially Ocampos and Fernando) and without a specific right back, appealed to their two winter signings, Martial and Tecatico, to end their draw streak. Both formed, together with En-Nesyri, an attacking trio that in the first half did not find a way to score, especially the Moroccan.

In a first part in which Elche managed to cut the rhythm of the locals, Sevilla crashed with their lack of success, especially in the boots of En-Nesyri, who had two very clear chances to score and to have made his team arrive at the break with an advantage. The first was at 13 minutes, when Tecatito Corona put him ahead and was unable to hit one on one with Edgar Badía. He didn’t even shoot and allowed a defender to take the ball from him. The second was six minutes later after a shot by Rakitic that the goalkeeper from Elche repelled, the rebound falling to the Moroccan, who was prevented from finishing off by an untimely slip.

At the break, Lopetegui looked for more depth and punished Fez with a bench shot. He replaced him Munir so that Martial played his first minutes as a striker. And the French would end up being key. It was difficult for Sevilla to break up the game, since Elche continued with their tactic of slowing down the rival’s rhythm. Rakitic tried it first with a strong and placed shot that Edgar Badía repelled and it would be Papu Gómez who would open the can after a ball stolen by Martial. The Argentine leaned to the side and was looking for the hole for the shot, which he hit in Verdú and dislodged the illicit goalkeeper. It was the 70th minute and Sevilla was breathing, especially when Rafa Mir put the sentence with another good action by Martial. The Frenchman broke into space and looked for the Murcian with a great cross, who gave strength to his shot and beat Edgar Badía with the post. Only five minutes had passed since 1-0.

Elche, then, entered all the rush, but Sevilla knew how to handle the final minutes well to take a weight off their shoulders. Lopetegui’s men win again, the Gipuzkoan shakes off some criticism and the fans keep on dreaming.
